Specific Gravity

Specific Gravity
USP <841>

Specific Gravity is the ratio of the weight of a measured volume (density) of a liquid to an equal volume of water at a given temperature (25ºC). Specific Gravity is also referred to as Relative Density and is only applicable to liquids.

We use Method I in the USP where a clean, dry pycnometer is filled with the substance being tested. The weight is used to determine the density and the density is compared to the density of water at the same temperature.
